PenguinsAs part of an interdisciplinary unit of study on penguins, students read many books on penguins, both fiction and nonfiction. They saw videos, PowerPoints from the National Science Foundation, and searched the Internet for information about penguins. They learned about the physical features of penguins. They compared their heights to that of the penguins. Students made life size replicas of penguins. They researched where in the world penguins live and created maps. Students learned how penguins stay warm by making a blubber glove and testing the icy water. Students researched penguin predators. They learned about how baby penguins are raised. They also researched what penguins eat and how their parents feed baby penguins. Students continued their research of penguins during two in house field trips presented by educators from the New England Aquarium. There they learned about penguin’s behavior and how to act like penguins, collect and analyze data, and make a graph based on observations of penguin movements just like a scientist. They found out about counter shading and many more interesting facts about penguins. Ask a first grader about regurgitation, brood pouches, counter shading, tobogganing, trumpeting, waddling, preening, rookery, krill, and many other terms related to penguins. Finally students created books and posters of penguins based on their research.
