ecosystems

The fourth grade is studying four types of ecosystems throughout the world.  Miss Leisk's class is studying rain forests, Mrs. Kiernan's class is studying deserts, Mrs. Viselli's class is studying oceans, and Miss Carbone's class is studying the tundra.    With our assigned topics, we are researching animals that live in the ecosystems, writing research reports, and presenting oral reports.

We are also creating eco-columns where plants and organisms live in a self-contained environment to observe how an ecosystem works.

The Best Bits

Third Grade Social Studies and Science

Students brainstormed a list of topics about which they wanted to learn more, and then had the opportunity to investigate these topics further in class. In Social Studies, students chose to investigate the topics of: Paul Revere, Martin Luther King Jr., The American Revolution and the Children’s Crusade.  Science topics included: mountains, forests, oceans and forests and hills. Students studied each topic, created rough drafts of research papers about them, and finally consolidated their findings within a “Prezi,” a web-based presentation application that uses a single canvas instead of traditional slides. Text, images, videos and other presentation objects are placed on the “infinite” canvas and grouped together in frames.

presenting with technology

Students learned how to use a variety of software applications to record and showcase their learning about Massachusetts.  They initially created PowerPoint presentations that distilled their findings and observations, then transferred this information into a “Prezi” format. Prezi is a web-based presentation application that uses a single canvas instead of traditional slides. Text, images, videos and other presentation objects are placed on the “infinite” canvas and grouped together in frames.
