MOCK ELECTION
As part of our 3rd grade science standards, the water cycle, students participated in a 1 month study on the water cycle. Some activities
involved: independent and group research, experiments involving the different stages, and creative displays and diagrams of the whole water cycle. As a cumulative activity students tested water quality; ph; turbidity; temperature; and clarity on a field trip with the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority. Students used the gathered data to write a journal reflection about local water
quality.
As part of our 3rd grade science curriculum, students participated in a unit on states of matter and properties of objects, Some activities included: creating visuals representations of solid, liquids and gases, experimenting with various states of matter and using scientific journaling to record findings, and writing and participating in a play on changing states of matter. We ended this unit with a traveling field trip presented by the museum of science. During the presentation students observed and engaged in experiments with various gases, liquids, and solids. After the field trip, students wrote reflections on their learning experiences using science vocabulary and the scientific process.
The Remarkable History of Technology – First, Third and Eighth Grade
The process of Independent Investigative Method (IIM) actively involves students in their own learning by empowering them to access information and helping them to become independent, responsible, confident, and excited researchers. Students learn not only the content of the curriculum they are studying, but a set of research and study skills. All students learn that:
- Research is a sequential process
- Research is used to answer questions
- There are many sources of information
- They must site all sources using a standard format for their bibliography
- They need to put information into their own words
- Information must be organized for use in a product
- They should share what they learn with an appropriate audience
These are lifelong skills, which students can learn and use throughout their schools and into their careers.
English As a Second Language – Grade 3
After participating in a unit called “Coming to America,” students wrote stories about how and when their families came to America, and what historical and economic factors helped to shape their lives. Students assembled photos of themselves and their families and worked to assemble their varied stories into a book.
